Rose laying event, ceremony, Buddy Poppy distribution and an “unofficial” run among local happenings


The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be honoring the memory of our fallen military heroes on Memorial Day at Folsom Lakeside Memorial Lawn and the Folsom Veterans Hall.

Buddy Poppy Distribution

Prior to Memorial Day, a Buddy Poppy Distribution is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. outside of Lowe’s on East Bidwell.

VFW Breakfast

The Saturday, May 28 the American Region will hold breakfast from 8 am until 11 am at the Folsom Veteran’s Hall followed by a Chapel Service at noon.

Rose laying event

On Monday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m., VFW Post 6604, in collaboration with the Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms, will commence the day with a heartfelt tribute. Roses will be laid on over 600 gravesites of veterans at Lakeside Memorial Lawn

Ceremony at Veterans Hall

A Memorial Day ceremony and flag retirement event will commence at 11 a.m. in Veterans Hall. The program will commence with an opening prayer and the reading of a proclamation. Brigadier General Robert F. Paoletti, Director Joint Staff California Guard, will deliver a speech honoring this solemn occasion.

Following that, Congressman Kevin Kiley will address the veterans. Finally, VFW members will raise the service flags and perform the retirement and raising of Old Glory.

The ceremony will draw to a close at 11:30 a.m., followed by a VFW BBQ where attendees can come together and commemorate the day.

The VFW, being the largest and oldest major war veterans’ organization in the nation, was established in 1899. It is a congressionally chartered organization that exclusively consists of eligible veterans and military service members from the active and reserve forces.

With over 1.5 million VFW and Auxiliary members located in more than 6,400 posts worldwide, this nonprofit veterans’ service organization takes immense pride in its commitment to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs.

Unofficial community run

In addition to the organized VFW events, the public is also invited to join in the action for what is being called the “unofficial” wounded Veteran run Monday. The event is set to being at 8 am in the parking lot of Vista del Lago High School where those wishing to spend the morning paying homage in the way of fitness are welcome to join.
