Members of Folsom’s VFW Post 6604 will roll up their sleeves and take to the trails on Saturday, May 3, to clean and restore a section of the city’s popular bike and pedestrian path system. The local effort is part of the national Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Day of Service, an annual initiative that mobilizes veterans across the country to give back to their communities.

Starting at 9:00 a.m., volunteers from Post 6604 and their families will assemble at 1300 Forrest Street before dispersing along a three-mile stretch of Folsom’s extensive trail network. The cleanup effort will involve picking up litter, clearing downed branches, and sprucing up the area for public enjoyment as the spring season continues.

This year marks the fourth installment of the VFW’s Day of Service, a growing movement under the organization’s #StillServing campaign. Launched in 2022, the Day of Service now includes approximately 1,500 events nationwide—three times the number held in its first year.

The VFW Day of Service was born from the idea that military service doesn’t end when a uniform comes off. The initiative invites veterans of all service branches—as well as civilians and nonprofit organizations—to participate in local projects aimed at addressing community needs in visible, hands-on ways.

According to a national civic health survey, veterans are significantly more likely than civilians to volunteer, donate to charitable causes, and participate in civic activities. The VFW reports that its members collectively contribute more than 5 million hours of volunteer time each year, with an estimated $44.5 million raised annually for community causes.

“The VFW Day of Service is about unity, pride, and making an impact,” said VFW National Commander Al Lipphardt in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see veterans, families, and supporters working side-by-side in neighborhoods across the country.”

Folsom’s participation this year underscores the city’s strong connection to its veteran community and its dedication to outdoor spaces, which include over 50 miles of trails winding through neighborhoods, woodlands, and riverfront.
