FOLSOM — Alpha Acton Academy is marking its first year in the community, celebrating a milestone for the private K–8 program that has introduced a learner-driven approach to education in Folsom.

The nonprofit academy, part of the global Acton Academy network, opened in 2024 under the direction of founder and Head of School Jane Ternavsky. From the outset, the school has focused on shifting traditional instruction toward project-based learning, goal-oriented challenges, and Socratic discussions designed to help students take ownership of their educational progress.

“Our first year has been remarkable,” Ternavsky said. “We’ve watched learners grow in confidence, curiosity, and leadership. Families are realizing that education can be joyful, self-directed, and deeply meaningful.”

Over the past year, students have participated in hands-on projects, completed public exhibitions of their work, and collaborated in multi-age learning studios. School leaders say the goal is to build not only academic foundations but strong character, independence, and problem-solving skills.

Alpha Acton Academy is now enrolling for the 2025–26 academic year. The school will also host its next community event, the Children’s Business Fair, on March 28, 2026. The fair will give families an opportunity to meet the program’s guides, tour the campus, and learn more about its model of self-paced mastery and real-world learning.

Founded as a nonprofit independent academy, Alpha Acton Academy aims to equip students with the confidence, curiosity, and courage needed to thrive. Its approach aligns with the broader Acton Academy network, which promotes learner-driven discovery and small-scale educational environments centered on independence and character development.
