The United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona has announced the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars and Folsom resident Penelope Oliver is amongst the list of 161 high school seniors being recognized for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education.

“The 161 high school seniors selected for the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Presidential Scholars represents the best of our nation’s schools and inspire hope in the bright future of this country,” said Cardona. “On behalf of President Biden, I am delighted to celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage these scholars to continue to aim high, lift up others, and embrace opportunities to lead.”

Oliver is a resident of Folsom and a high school senior, she studies at Horizon Charter School which is based in Lincoln. While she is one of 161 students from across the nation on the list, she is just one of nine students from California. As any high school student would be, Oliver was excited to get the word she made the list and has since been doing her share of media interviews, while she is still busy studying and doing advocacy work with the non-profit she founded known as All Access Arts which provided STEM and arts education to different communities including working in shelters four times a week. When she was 17, she also was recognized for interviewing First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom where they discussed the state’s Farm to School program.

“I still haven’t gotten over it. To me, this means that hard work does pay off, that I’m living proof that dreams and ambition and having compassion and passion to change your community are so powerful.” said Oliver, who was nominated as a candidate for consideration as opposed being named by means of SAT or ACT test scores as many others are.

Of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,700 candidates qualified for the 2024 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or through nominations made by chief state school officers, other partner recognition organizations and YoungArts, the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists.

As directed by Presidential Executive Order, the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars are comprised of two students from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 scholars in career and technical education, according to information provide to Folsom Times by the United States Board of Education.

So what’s ahead for this already much accomplished young lady from Folsom? It looks like higher educations and plenty of advocacy and non—profit work will be in her future. She plans to attended the University of California, Berkley where she will seek a political science and international relations degree with a minor in human rights, and she’s not stopping there but no matter what will continue “being herself,” as she puts it.

“I also want to go to law school, and I possibly want to be a human rights lawyer, or an immigration lawyer or work for the United Nations,” she recently shared. “Whatever journey you’re on, you can succeed and continue being yourself.”

The Presidential Scholars Class of 2024 will be recognized for their outstanding achievement this summer with an online recognition program.
