High school football entered Week 9 of its regular season and the fifth week of conference play for most teams in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section on Friday night. Among the local teams, two of the four most local squads took wins, with Vista del Lago having the week off due to a bye.
Prairie City Stadium in Folsom was dark Friday night, but the Folsom Bulldogs were in action on the road at Rocklin, where they faced the Whitney Wildcats. Folsom defeated Whitney 69-7, improving to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the Sierra Foothill League. The Bulldogs remain ranked No. 1 and are poised for a strong playoff run in a couple of weeks.
Folsom got on the scoreboard early with 11 minutes left in the first quarter when Kam Totton returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown. The successful PAT gave Folsom a 7-0 lead. Whitney responded with a nine-yard pass from Carson Floyd to Gettis Rose, tying the game at 7 with a successful PAT. However, that would be the Wildcats’ only score of the night.
With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Carter Jackson ran 28 yards for a touchdown, doubling Folsom’s lead. Eight minutes into the second quarter, Ryder Lyons threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jason Hill, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-7. Folsom kept the momentum going with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Lyons to EJ Coleman.
With four minutes left before halftime, a blocked punt led to Theo Greule’s 30-yard return for another touchdown, putting Folsom up 35-7. The Bulldogs weren’t done yet—Lyons connected with Jameson Powell on a 16-yard touchdown pass with two minutes remaining, increasing the lead to 42-7 at halftime.
The third quarter saw more Folsom dominance. Jason Hill caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Lyons, followed by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Taniela Tupou. Folsom entered the final quarter leading 56-7.
In the fourth quarter, Blake Nycum’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Eyerman and Erick Orme Jr.’s 13-yard rushing touchdown capped off the Bulldogs’ victory, ending the night with a 69-7 win. Folsom will travel to Jesuit next Friday night.
Down the road, Cordova faced a tough night against Destiny Christian Academy, falling 49-0. The Lancers are now 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Metropolitan League, where they rank third. Cordova will hit the road again next Friday to take on the Elite Eagles in Vallejo.
Meanwhile, the Oak Ridge Trojans extended its record to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in league play with a blowout win over Davis Senior High. The Trojans never allowed Davis to get to the scoreboard, wining 71-0 The Trojans are currently second in the league and will host Whitney next Friday.
To the north, Granite Bay traveled to Rocklin for a high-stakes matchup. Rocklin struck first with a late first-quarter touchdown, but Granite Bay answered with a 27-yard rushing touchdown from Isaiah Ene, tying the score heading into the second quarter. With nine minutes left in the second quarter, Rocklin added another rushing touchdown, and the teams went into halftime with Rocklin leading 28-21.
The second half was all Rocklin, as they kept Granite Bay off the scoreboard and secured a 35-21 victory. Granite Bay is now 6-2 overall and 3-2 in league play. They will return home next week to host Davis Senior.
After having Friday off, Vista del Lago will also return to action next Friday, hosting Ponderosa. The Eagles enter the game 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the Capital Valley League, where they sit third. Ponderosa comes into the matchup 5-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.
