During a protective sweep of the room, officers discovered a bullet hole in the floor, police said. Both occupants initially denied any knowledge of what had occurred, prompting further investigation by patrol officers and detectives.

Based on information gathered at the scene, investigators authored a search warrant for the motel room and an associated vehicle. While searching the vehicle, officers located a handgun inside the glove compartment. During the investigation, one of the occupants admitted the other individual had accidentally discharged the firearm while showing it to them.
