The Harris Center for the Arts is gearing up for a musical theater event of the season as Hadestown, the winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards® including Best New Musical, takes the stage for six performances from December 12-15. Featuring evening shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and matinees at 2:00 p.m. Friday through Sunday, tickets are now available for this celebrated production and you’ll want to get your fast.

Praised as the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season, Hadestown has also earned a Grammy® for Best Musical Theater Album, alongside numerous accolades, including four Drama Desk Awards and six Outer Critics Circle Awards. Critics continue to laud the musical as a cultural phenomenon, with the Chicago Sun-Times hailing it as “Scorching! Stunning! Both unmistakably timely and irresistibly entertaining.”

The musical’s roots lie in singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s original indie theater project, which evolved into an acclaimed album before being transformed for the stage under the direction of Tony Award® winner Rachel Chavkin. Mitchell, who wrote the music, lyrics, and book, is the first solo female author of a Broadway musical in over a decade and only the fourth in history to achieve this milestone.

“Mesmerizing! Hadestown arrives in smoldering fashion,” praised Los Angeles Times critic Charles McNulty. “Unfurling like a dream, the show achieves a fluidity of musical theater storytelling that makes an old tale seem startlingly new.”

The show intertwines the mythic love stories of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone, combining modern American folk with New Orleans-inspired jazz. Mitchell’s haunting melodies and Chavkin’s imaginative direction create a theatrical journey through the underworld and back, exploring themes of love, doubt, and resilience.

Originally premiering at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, where it became the longest-running production in the theater’s history, Hadestown has since captivated audiences in Canada, London, and Broadway, where it continues to play to sold-out crowds.

The Grammy®-winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is available online, providing a taste of the vibrant ensemble performance awaiting audiences at the Harris Center.
