Event for local racers is the annual prelude to upcoming Hangtown Motocross

Motocross enthusiasts from across the region are gearing up for one of Northern California’s most anticipated amateur racing events this weekend. The 2025 Hangtown Amateur Classic roars into Prairie City State Vehicle Recreation Area on Saturday and Sunday, May 24–25, offering local riders the rare chance to race on the same professionally prepped track that will host the world’s top motocross athletes the following weekend.

Dubbed “The Oldest and the Boldest” amateur motocross event in the region, the Hangtown Amateur Classic is more than just a race—it’s a legacy. Hosted at the historic Hangtown National track at 13300 White Rock Road in Rancho Cordova, the weekend gives amateur racers the opportunity to compete on the same legendary dirt where champions are crowned.

Organized by the dedicated Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club, the Hangtown Amateur Classic welcomes riders of all ages and skill levels across two full days of racing. From local weekend warriors to rising youth stars, the event draws hundreds of competitors and fans, all eager to experience the thrill of racing at one of motocross’s most celebrated venues.

The event officially begins with Friday setup on May 23, as gates open from noon to 9 p.m. for pit camping and rider check-in. Saturday’s schedule kicks off early, with gates opening at 6 a.m., registration from 7 to 9 a.m., practice from 8 to 9 a.m., and a mandatory rider’s meeting at 9:15 a.m. The first moto gate drop is set for 9:30 a.m., with all big bike classes running throughout the day.

Sunday, May 25, follows the same morning schedule, but shifts the spotlight to youth divisions, vintage bikes, and women racers aged 14 and older. From tiny PW50s to classic two-stroke machines, the diversity of classes on Sunday promises excitement for racers and spectators alike.

One of this year’s featured races is the 50+ C Class, where the winner will receive a special $500 grand prize in memory of Jason Mascari, a beloved figure in the motocross community known for his passion for the sport.

General admission is priced to encourage family attendance, with children ages 0–5 (non-riders) admitted free and $10 per person for ages 6 and older. All attendees must sign waivers and wear wristbands throughout the event grounds.

Dry camping is available in the pits, with weekend camping set at $75 and single-day options at $40. All spaces are first come, first served with no hookups available. Whether in a truck, RV, trailer, or tent, racegoers are encouraged to arrive early and settle in for the full Hangtown experience.

All riders must have a current AMA membership and check in to receive practice stickers and wristbands. Strict safety and organizational guidelines are in place: adults must be present to register youth racers and sign waivers; no pit bikes, bicycles, e-bikes, golf carts, or UTVs are allowed; and only one mechanic with a wristband may accompany a rider to the start line.
