High school and college students from across California are set to launch their solar-powered creations into competition waters this weekend as the 12th annual California Solar Regatta returns to Rancho Seco Recreational Area.
Organized by SMUD, the California Solar Regatta challenges student teams to design, build, and race full-sized solar-powered boats in a spirited showcase of engineering, creativity, and renewable energy. The two-day event, taking place Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, brings together 16 high school teams and 10 college teams, totaling more than 500 students from around the region and state.
The regatta is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of hands-on STEM learning. By building their boats from the ground up and incorporating solar technology, students gain valuable real-world experience in science, technology, engineering, and math. SMUD, which is working toward a zero-carbon power supply by 2030, created the event as part of its broader mission to encourage renewable energy education and inspire future innovators in clean energy fields.
“This event brings energy and innovation to life,” said SMUD representatives. “It’s a fun way to engage students in renewable energy while giving them a meaningful opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.”
Friday’s races will feature high school teams, while college teams will take the spotlight on Saturday. Events run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a break for lunch between 12 and 1 p.m. on both days. Spectators will see the solar boats compete in a variety of categories including speed, endurance, slalom skill, and technical presentation. The top-performing team will receive the coveted Regatta Cup, along with additional prizes awarded across multiple divisions.
The California Solar Regatta is open to the public and will be held at the scenic Rancho Seco Recreational Area, located at 14960 Twin Cities Road in Herald. A special media opportunity is available Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., offering a closer look at the student projects and solar boats in action.
