Historic Folsom is going to the dogs again—at least for a few hours on Sunday, Sept. 29. It’s the second annual Pawtoberfest, a free dog-friendly, family event packed with pooch-themed fun, vendors, exhibitions, contests, and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will take place at the Zittel Family Amphitheater in the heart of Historic Folsom. Pawtoberfest will benefit the local Hearts 4 Heroes USA Paw Platoon placement program. The festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29.

Hearts 4 Heroes USA, a local nonprofit, strives to provide firefighters, EMTs, and EMS personnel nationwide with the care and support they deserve, specializing in the placement of emotional support dogs with first responder agencies.

The organization was founded by firefighters and emergency medical services members. “We work with passionate people who want to help first responders by supporting their mental health needs,” the group states. You can learn more about the organization at www.hearts4heroesusa.com.

Pawtoberfest offers free admission for those who want to check out the festivities, visit with local vendors, and watch exhibitions, including a pet costume contest. Yes, you read that right—there will be costumed pets, and some of their humans will be dressed up as well.

According to Hearts 4 Heroes co-founder Shelley Martell, this year’s event will be even bigger than last year’s, which was very successful for a first-time event. The event will expand beyond the amphitheater into much of the surrounding plaza, where guests can explore numerous pet-related vendors, exhibitions, entertainment, and more.

“So far, we have nearly tripled in size,” Martell told Folsom Times. “This year, we have the whole space opened up.”

In addition to fun activities for those bringing their furry family members, there will be plenty for those without pets to enjoy. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Hearts 4 Heroes firefighters and police handlers, along with their “pawsome” therapy dogs, who are making a positive impact on the lives of first responders.

“We will feature local pet businesses offering a variety of products for your beloved pets,” Hearts4Heroes adds. “Enjoy food, drinks, and special treats for your pups. Check out the stage lineup for presentations from trainers, dog food companies, and more—all to benefit a great cause.”
