Families by the hundreds came out to join the fun with the Folsom Police and Fire Departments on Saturday for their annual Public Safety Trunk-or-Treat that took place in the parking lot of the Folsom Police Department beneath sunny skies.

Entry is  was free to the events as participants came donning their Halloween costumes and collected treats while they explored police cars and fire trucks, checked out SWAT equipment, met K-9  officers, first responder therapy dogs, and horsed and got to visit with Police Officers, Firefighters, Mercy Hospital staff, Cert Volunteers and more.

The event is put together each year to give families a safe outing to celebrate Halloween. For those that plan to go out on the holiday itself, the Folsom Police Department offers a number of tips for a safe evening out in the city:

Be Safe; Be Seen. Choose light or brightly colored costumes and consider adding reflective tape to the costume and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. Have each child carry a flashlight with fresh batteries and a glow stick to use after dark.

Make a Plan. Plan your route ahead of time. Discuss proper and appropriate behavior that you expect from your child before leaving the house. Have a meeting point in case you and your child get separated, and set a time for older kids to return home.

Candy Check. Check all candy before your child is allowed to eat any of it. Items with loose or damaged wrappers should be discarded. Do not eat homemade treats unless you know and trust the person who gave it to your child.

Home Safe. While at home handing out treats, don’t open the door for anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable and never let strangers inside your home.
