The much anticipated California Capital Airshow 2024 took flight against the backdrop overcast skies that brought some cooler temperatures and even some sprinkles of rain as it opened for its first of two big days at Mather Airport in Rancho Cordova Saturday afternoon.

As soon as the gates opened late in the afternoon, eager guests of all ages, and many families staked their spot out to witness this years lineup of world-class aerial performances, historic aircraft displays, and interactive ground exhibits. Presented by Sacramento County in partnership with the City of Rancho Cordova, this annual event promised an unforgettable experience celebrating the rich heritage and innovation of aviation and there is still another entire day to go.

The afternoon and twilight spectacle included a thunderous display from the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, showcasing their precision and mastery in the skies. Flying in tight formations, the Thunderbirds’ F-16 Fighting Falcon jets performed breathtaking maneuvers that seemed to defy physics.

From high-speed passes to daring barrel rolls, each maneuver demonstrated the pilots’ skill and the aircraft’s capabilities, leaving spectators in awe of their synchronized aerial ballet.

Following the Thunderbirds, much of which fit the billing of a rock concert into the air described by Airshow Executive Director Darcy Brewer, the Frecce Tricolori of the Italian Air Force took center stage performing it’s aerial spectacle just as Brewer described it would be, being similar to that of an orchestrated fine symphony in the ski.

 Known for their impeccable coordination and artistic flair, the Frecce Tricolori flew in their distinctive MB.339A/PAN jets, painting the sky with the colors of the Italian flag. Their synchronized formations, loops, and crosses showcased the team’s precision and national pride, earning applause and admiration from the audience.

The  F-35 Lightning II Demo Team captivated spectators with the stealth and agility of the fifth-generation fighter. Led by Captain Melanie “MACH” Kluesner, the F-35 Lightning II demonstrated its versatility with a series of high-speed passes, vertical climbs, and tight turns. The aircraft’s advanced capabilities, including its stealth technology and sensor fusion, were on full display as Captain Kluesner pushed the aircraft to its limits, leaving spectators marveling at its cutting-edge performance.

The  F/A-18 Super Hornet TacDemo showcased the aircraft’s versatility and lethality in various combat scenarios. Pilots demonstrated the Super Hornet’s capabilities in air superiority, close air support, and reconnaissance missions, performing simulated combat maneuvers that highlighted its speed, maneuverability, and firepower. The TacDemo underscored the Super Hornet’s critical role in naval aviation and its ability to excel in dynamic and demanding environments.

The C-17 Globemaster III Demonstration Team wowed the crowd with the massive transport aircraft’s agility and versatility. Despite its size, the C-17 performed tactical maneuvers that showcased its ability to operate in austere conditions and deliver cargo to remote locations. Spectators marveled at the aircraft’s ability to execute steep climbs, sharp turns, and precision landings, highlighting its pivotal role in global humanitarian missions and military operations.

Adding to the aerial spectacle, GhostWriter Airshows brought nighttime aerobatics to new heights with a stunning performance in a modified 1956 deHavilland Chipmunk. Pilot Nathan Hammond’s skillful maneuvers, enhanced by pyrotechnics and LED lights, created a mesmerizing display against the darkening sky. His daring loops, rolls, and inverted flight left spectators on the edge of their seats, concluding with a spectacular pyro-musical fireworks display that illuminated the night sky.

The Sukhoi West Demo Team impressed with the aerobatic capabilities of the Sukhoi SU-26, demonstrating high-speed rolls, inverted flight, and precise maneuvers. Pilots Randy Howell and Cory Lovell showcased the aircraft’s agility and performance, thrilling the audience with their daring aerobatics and technical skill.
 On the ground, the California Capital Airshow offered a journey through aviation history with its impressive collection of warbirds. Vintage aircraft such as Mustangs, Lightnings, and Thunderbolts, which played pivotal roles in World War II and the Korean War, were on display for visitors to explore up close. Historical reenactors provided insights into the aircraft’s wartime roles and technological advancements, offering a glimpse into the past and honoring the bravery of pilots who flew these iconic aircraft.

Large Military Transport Aircraft such as the C-5 Super Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III, KC-10 Extender, and KC-135 Stratotanker were showcased, allowing attendees to marvel at their size and capabilities. Visitors had the rare opportunity to tour these massive aircraft, exploring their cargo holds, cockpits, and meeting the dedicated crews responsible for their operation. Interactive exhibits provided educational insights into the aircraft’s missions, from aerial refueling to strategic airlift and humanitarian aid.
Public safety and first responders were prominently featured throughout the ground showcase, highlighting the essential roles of airplanes and helicopters in law enforcement, medical evacuation, surveillance, and firefighting. Agencies showcased specialized aircraft and equipment, offering demonstrations and interactive displays that showcased their capabilities and contributions to public safety.

As the sun set, the California Capital Airshow transformed into a mesmerizing nighttime extravaganza. Aerial performances continued under the cover of darkness, enhanced by pyrotechnics, walls of fire, and a grand finale of fireworks that lit up the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors. The 500-drone show, choreographed to music, created a visual masterpiece that captivated spectators and marked a fitting conclusion to an exhilarating day of aviation celebration.
