The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an incident that resulted in the death of one inmate and hospitalization of another after they were found unresponsive in their cell Friday.

According to a department press release, at approximately 11:15 A.M., Main Jail Deputies responded to a cell in the 300 pod of 8-East regarding two unresponsive male inmates. Both inmates were removed from the cell, and Deputies immediately began to administer first aid, the department said. Narcan was also administered to both inmates multiple times, as staff continued first aid until Fire Department personnel arrived.

One of the inmates was revived and began to breathe on his own.  He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and ultimately medically cleared for incarceration.  He has since returned to the Main Jail.

The other inmate, reportedly a 40-year-old man who shared the same cell, was pronounced deceased at the jail.  His name is being withheld at this time but authorities said he had been in custody since June 22 of this year.
