The blues will be burning hot this Sunday in Historic Folsom as the Powerhouse of Blues welcomes one of the genre’s fiercest slide guitar masters to its stage. Dennis Johnson, renowned for his expressive guitar work and genre-bending sound, brings his signature style and chart-topping music to the Powerhouse Pub stage with the Revelator on Sunday.
With four acclaimed albums under his belt and an ever-evolving mastery of the slide guitar, Johnson has carved a name for himself as one of the premier blues-rock guitarists on the scene today. Hailed by Guitar World Magazine as a “Slide Guitar Master,” Johnson’s music blends gritty blues, roots rock, gospel, and country into electrifying performances that hit deep with every note.
The Sacramento-based artist is currently riding the wave of his latest album Revelation, a hard-hitting and groove-driven collection featuring standout collaborators. The album includes the talents of legendary drummer Anton Fig—best known as the rhythmic backbone of David Letterman’s late-night band—as well as keyboardist Bob Fridzema and longtime bassist Jonathan Stoyanoff. It’s a record that showcases Johnson’s nuanced musicianship and showcases the raw tone of his Fender Tweed Deluxe amp, played with nothing more than the varied pressure of his fingers on the strings.
“When you find the groove, the rest flows naturally,” Johnson says of his approach to the new album. That groove is felt on every track of Revelation, which claimed the #1 spot on the Blues Rock Album charts and featured several tracks that topped the Roots Music Report charts both in the U.S. and abroad.
From his early breakout with Slide Show to his international recognition with Slide Avenue and Rhythmland, Johnson’s career has been one of steady evolution, marked by a relentless pursuit of tone, feeling, and precision. With every live show, he brings that same passion to the stage—pushing the expressive boundaries of the slide guitar and leaving audiences in awe.
Whether you’re a seasoned blues fan or new to the world of slide guitar, Dennis Johnson’s set at Powerhouse promises a high-energy afternoon of virtuosity and soul.
