Former instructional leader returns to lead school he once called home

FOLSOM—There’s a familiar face leading Vista del Lago High School into the new school year. Phil Leonhardt, a former math teacher and instructional leader on the campus, has returned to Vista as its new principal, bringing with him a career of classroom experience, a history of leadership, and a deep connection to the school community.

Leonhardt steps into the role following the departure of former principal Kim Moore, who recently announced she would be moving on to a new professional chapter. With the transition, the district found a fitting successor in someone who not only knows the school but helped shape its culture during his previous tenure.

“I am honored and excited to return home to Vista del Lago,” Leonhardt said. “My goal is to continue the outstanding work that has been taking place for the past 18 years and to build upon the strong culture that makes Vista such a special place for students, families, and staff.”

Leonhardt began his career in education in 2005 at Grant Union High School, where he served in multiple roles including math teacher, coach, department chair, and WASC coordinator. In 2015, he joined the Folsom Cordova Unified School District and began teaching math at Vista del Lago. During his years on campus, he led as the Math Department Division Leader, served as intervention coordinator, and played an instrumental role in implementing the school’s intervention period—all while also coaching baseball and supporting student life.

For the past five years, Leonhardt served as assistant principal at Ponderosa High School in El Dorado County. There, he continued his work with instructional leadership, student support, and professional learning communities, further honing the skills that he now brings back to Folsom.

Known by colleagues for his collaborative leadership and student-first mindset, Leonhardt is committed to ensuring that all students receive a high-quality education in a safe and inclusive environment.
