Return features 15-minute weekday frequency, new low-floor rail vehicles

After months of construction that took longer than expected, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) is set to resume light rail service to Folsom area stations on Sunday, Jan. 5. The restoration of service comes following the completion of a major project to install a passing track at the Glenn/Robert G. Holderness Station, a key milestone in SacRT’s efforts to modernize and enhance transit in the region.

Starting Monday,, weekday light rail service will operate with a new 15-minute frequency at all Folsom area stations, including Hazel, Iron Point, Glenn Drive Robert G. Holderness, and Historic Folsom. This represents a significant improvement in convenience for riders, as all weekday Gold Line trains will now serve these stations, eliminating the previous alternating train schedule. Weekend service will continue with a 30-minute frequency.

The addition of the passing track at the Glenn DriveRobert G. Holderness Station allows SacRT to provide the increased weekday service. Riders at this station will notice a new design featuring two separate boarding platforms and tracks. Passengers will board one side for travel toward Historic Folsom and the other side for travel toward Sacramento. SacRT urges riders to exercise caution and look both ways before crossing the tracks.

On weekdays, light rail trains will run approximately every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Weekend service will maintain a 30-minute frequency, with trains running every other Gold Line train at Folsom area stations.

The return of light rail service to Folsom brings 15 minute weekday frequency as well as SacRT’s new low floor rail cars.

To prepare for the service resumption, SacRT is conducting operator training and testing at the Folsom stations. During this period, all outbound trains will end passenger service at Iron Point Station before continuing to Historic Folsom for operator training. Trains will then return to Iron Point to resume service toward Sacramento.

Riders will also enjoy SacRT’s new low-floor light rail vehicles, which offer improved accessibility and a more comfortable travel experience. Updated Gold Line schedules, effective January 5, are available online at www.sacrt.com/schedules. Riders can also call 916-321-BUSS (2877) for trip planning assistance.

SacRT’s Light Rail Modernization Project includes the installation of the passing track, station platform modifications, and the addition of new light rail vehicles. These advancements underscore SacRT’s dedication to improving transit options and enhancing the rider experience.

As service resumes, Folsom area residents are encouraged to support local businesses by visiting www.choosefolsom.com for a directory of shops and services. SacRT thanks the community for their patience during the project and looks forward to welcoming riders back to an improved light rail system.
