Yasash Palem, an 11th grader at nearby Ponderosa High School, was recently selected to serve as a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders held at University of Massachusetts Lowell campus.
The Congress is an honors-only academic program designed for high school students who aspire to become physicians or enter the field of medical research. Its purpose is to honor, inspire, motivate, and provide guidance to the most promising students in the country who are committed to pursuing careers in medicine.
Palem’s nomination was personally signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. He was chosen to represent Ponderosa High School based on his academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, and commitment to making a difference in the world through medicine.

Over the three-day event, Palem joined top-performing students from across the United States and had the opportunity to hear from Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients about groundbreaking medical research. He also received guidance from Ivy League and top medical school deans, listened to powerful stories from patients considered living medical miracles, and engaged with other teen medical prodigies. The Congress also featured presentations on the future of medicine and advancements in medical technology.
Organizers of the event stress the importance of investing in future medical leaders like Palem at a time when the nation faces a growing need for highly prepared doctors and scientists.
The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists offers a range of free programs and services for students pursuing medical careers. These include access to online networks for collaboration, mentoring opportunities with physicians and medical students, and guidance on college admissions, scholarships, internships, and career planning.
The Academy, headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in Boston, was founded to identify and nurture promising medical talent early in life. Its mission is to ensure that gifted students receive the support and skills they need to pursue careers devoted to serving humanity through medicine and scientific advancement.
