A 21-year-old man was arrested after deputies responded to a report of a passenger possibly carrying a firearm on a Sacramento Regional Transit bus near Routier Road and Ellenwood Drive in Rancho Cordova authorities said.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon when deputies assigned to the Sacramento Regional Transit District were alerted to a tip involving a man onboard a bus who was believed to be armed. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the report included live video that appeared to show the man seated toward the rear of the bus with what looked like a rifle inside a backpack.
When a deputy arrived on scene and contacted the bus driver outside the vehicle, the man exited the bus and walked toward deputies. He was safely detained without incident, and no injuries were reported. Authorities said there was no indication that the weapon had been displayed or used in a threatening manner during the incident.
A search of the backpack later revealed a loaded, unregistered rifle, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The man was identified as Kanye Smithburns, 21, and was taken into custody and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on weapons-related charges.
Officials said Smithburns was released several hours later on pre-trial probation and is expected to appear in court. His booking photo was not made available for public release, as California law classifies the alleged offenses as non-violent.
Sacramento Regional Transit operations were not significantly disrupted, and passengers were able to continue their trips following the response. Authorities emphasized that tips from the public and coordination between transit staff and law enforcement played a key role in the safe resolution of the incident.
