Students and families at Mangini Ranch Elementary School took part in a special event this week, joining others across the nation.  The act was a simple one, yet very meaningful as the families joined together and walked to school on Thursday as part of Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

Thursday’s walk, took place to pay tribute to civil rights icon Ruby Bridges. Bridges made history as the first African American child to desegregate an all-white school in New Orleans back in 1960. Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day marked the 63rd anniversary of this historic civil rights moment.

Upon arriving at school, students were greeted by staff and parents who handed out sack packs, flags, banners. Those who participated also got to enjoy donuts, and fresh orange juice upon their arrival.

According to a public post by the Folsom Cordova Unified School District, the campus became a, “vibrant sea of purple as students gathered at meet-up points decorated with purple balloons, serving as central locations that brought everyone together.

Students showcased their creativity by crafting uplifting signs, contributing to the event’s positivity. According to the FCUSD, one parent, described the morning as “a moving experience that was magnified by walking onto a campus with beautiful children from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.”

Mangini Ranch Elementary School serves the Folsom Rancho Community, which is south of highway 50. The FCUSD is home to just over 600 students in K – 5.
