Over $2,000 raised in naming contest as new bear enjoys warm welcome and poolside living

Folsom’s newest and hairiest resident now has a name, thanks to the enthusiastic support of the local community. During a special announcement Friday night at the City of Folsom’s Outdoor Movie Night and Zoo Open House, Mayor Sarah Aquino revealed that the winning name for the zoo’s newest bear is Matilda.

The name was selected through a public naming contest hosted by the Friends of the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, where supporters voted with their wallets, raising over $2,000 to benefit the care of Matilda and her lifelong companion, Herbie. The funds will go toward intake costs, veterinary care, enrichment supplies, and of course—pool toys for the playful duo.

Matilda, a female Eurasian Brown Bear, was reunited with Herbie at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary earlier this year after the two were separated following the closure of a Northern California wildlife facility. Herbie had been welcomed to the sanctuary in March, and zoo officials had long hoped they would eventually be able to reunite the bonded pair. Thanks to changed circumstances and the zoo’s continued advocacy, Matilda joined Herbie at the Folsom sanctuary in what has become a feel-good success story for both bears.

On Friday evening, the community turned out in large to meet Matilda during extended, free zoo hours before the movie night festivities began at Lions Park. Visitors explored the zoo grounds and were treated to the sight of both Matilda and Herbie making appearances—much to the delight of onlookers, young and old.

After the sun dipped below the trees, families gathered on the lawn for a screening of Disney’s Brother Bear, a fitting way to end the bear-themed celebration. The event was supported by Palladio 16 Cinemas and Luxe Theaters, who helped make the first of this summer’s three City of Folsom outdoor movie nights a memorable one. Local vendors and businesses also set up shop for the evening, rounding out the festive community atmosphere.

The naming contest and public celebration served as more than just fun and games—they helped raise awareness and much-needed support for the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary and the work of the Friends of the Folsom Zoo, a nonprofit that has contributed nearly $2.4 million to the zoo in the past two decades.

With her name now chosen and announced, Matilda is settling into her new life in Folsom. From poolside lounging to greeting guests alongside Herbie, she’s already become a beloved part of the sanctuary community.
