Folsom Zoo Welcomes new American Black Bear as permanent resident to sanctuary

There’s a new face at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. He’s big, he’s lovable, and he’s already stealing hearts—and maybe a few snacks. Meet Herbie, a five-year-old North American Black Bear who has officially made Folsom his forever home.

Big, brown, and undeniably adorable, Herbie arrived recently thanks to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife after his previous facility closed its doors. While much of his backstory remains a mystery, one thing is already clear: Herbie is playful, curious, and has a serious love for mealtime.

Because Herbie has lived his entire life under human care, returning to the wild isn’t an option. But thanks to the compassionate team at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, this lovable bear now has a safe, enriching environment where he can thrive—and be doted on by visitors of all ages.

Herbie is a hot topic on our Instagram right now, come join the conversation HERE.

The Folsom Zoo Sanctuary is no stranger to giving second chances. It serves as a haven for dozens of rescued wild and domestic animals, each with a unique story. From wolf-hybrids and cougars to monkeys, birds, reptiles, and more, every resident is treated with respect, care, and individuality. Now, Herbie joins this extraordinary animal family as one of the sanctuary’s most huggable (but strictly no-hugging!) stars.

Guests are invited to stroll along shaded, scenic paths that wind through the zoo’s wooded setting. Each turn offers a new encounter, a new story, and now, a chance to spot Herbie as he explores his new home. After saying hello to Herbie and the rest of the animal crew, families can hop aboard the beloved Folsom Valley Railway, which loops through the neighboring Folsom City Lions Park for a perfect ending to a day of discovery.

The zoo’s mission is “Teaching Responsible Behavior Toward All Animal,” remains evident in every habitat and every heartfelt story, like Herbie’s. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, now is the perfect time to plan a visit, especially with summer hours in full swing.
