Motorists traveling in both directions on Lake Natoma Crossing in Folsom experienced lengthy delays Sunday afternoon after a multi-car collision sent five victims to the hospital with injuries.
The incident occurred at 12:12 p.m. Units from the Folsom Fire Department and the Folsom Police Department were dispatched to the scene after several calls reported the incident to the 911 dispatch center. Assistance from the El Dorado Hills Fire Department was also requested as the collision was classified as a “multi-casualty incident (MCI),” requiring several medic units and teams. Upon arrival, Folsom Police reported from the scene that the incident involved five cars in total.
The vehicles included a FedEx delivery truck and a two vehicles pulling trailers, one of which was transporting an off-road sport utility vehicle (SUV) and another towing a camping trailer. Two passenger cars with multiple occupants was also involved, reportedly being struck by the larger FedEx truck in the collision.
A total of five people involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals. The victims included three adults and two children. One of the adults transported was the driver of the FedEx truck. The extent of the injuries was reported as minor to moderate among the victims, according to the initial report.
Units from both agencies remained active on the call for an hour and 47 minutes. Responding units included Folsom Medic Units 29, 36, and 37, along with aid from Medic 821 out of El Dorado Hills. Folsom’s Truck 35 and Engine 36 were utilized. Battalion chief units from both Folsom and El Dorado Hills managed the scene with multiple units from the Folsom Police Department.
According to the initial report from Folsom Police at the scene, the crash occurred after the FedEX truck involved crossed over the line. The crash is being investigated by the Folsom Police Department’s traffic collision team and it’s unknown if there was any type of medical emergency that caused the driver to travel out of the lane.
