Sutter Street Theatre is bringing a dose of classic comedy to Folsom with its newest production, The Sunshine Boys by legendary playwright Neil Simon, opening May 9 and running through June 1.

Directed by Janelle Kauffman and Connie Mockenhaupt, and presented in partnership with Kauffmans’ Give Us A Hand Productions, The Sunshine Boys tells the hilarious and heartwarming story of two aging vaudeville comedians, Al and Willie—once famously known as “Lewis and Clark.” After more than forty years of performing together, the duo hasn’t spoken in over a decade. But when CBS plans a “History of Comedy” retrospective and wants to feature the iconic pair, the stage is set for a reluctant reunion filled with memories, grudges, and plenty of laughs.

At the center of the story is a young theatrical agent who tries to convince his elderly uncle, Willie, to reconcile with his longtime partner Al and return to the stage one last time. As they revisit their old sketch, unresolved tensions flare, and comedic chaos ensues. It’s Neil Simon at his best—blending sharp wit, nostalgic charm, and the bittersweet realities of aging and friendship.

Performances will take place at Sutter Street Theatre in Folsom’s Historic District, located at 717 Sutter Street. Showtimes are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 4:30 p.m., with an additional Saturday evening show on May 10 at 7:30 p.m. There will be no performance on Sunday, May 25. The production is rated PG and is suitable for a wide range of audiences.

Family-friendly ‘Reluctant Dragon’ also hitting stage

Also hitting the stage this month at Sutter Street Theatre is The Reluctant Dragon, a whimsical and thought-provoking adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale. Opening May 10 and running through June 8, this family-friendly production offers a fresh and heartwarming story for all ages, with performances every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m., excluding May 25.

Directed by Haley McDaniel, with assistant direction by Brandon Newey and vocal direction by Heather Clark, The Reluctant Dragon explores an unlikely friendship between a misunderstood dragon and a curious young boy named Glaston. Far from the fire-breathing menace the villagers fear, the dragon of Guildermere is a kind-hearted creature who prefers writing poetry to waging war and enjoys quiet afternoons with tea rather than terrifying the countryside.

When superstitions rise and blame begins to fly—fueled by withering crops and spoiled milk—the townspeople grow fearful and summon the legendary Saint George to slay the beast. As tensions build, young Glaston must stand between his dragon friend and an all-too-eager hero to prevent a needless battle. The story unfolds with warmth, wit, and a strong message about how fear breeds prejudice, while kindness and understanding open the door to peace.

Adapted for the stage by Mary Hall Surface, this version of The Reluctant Dragon maintains the lyrical charm of Grahame’s original while giving emotional weight to its timeless themes. Past productions have earned national acclaim, and now local audiences will have a chance to experience its magic in the cozy, intimate setting of Historic Folsom’s treasured theatre.

Rated G, The Reluctant Dragon is a perfect theatrical outing for families seeking an uplifting, humorous, and meaningful experience—complete with a touch of medieval enchantment. Early reservations are strongly encouraged, as weekend matinees at Sutter Street Theatre often fill quickly.
