EL DORADO HILLS- Nugget Markets, with a location in the heart of El Dorado Hills has received the distinguished honor of being named one of the Best Independent Grocers of 2024 by Progressive Grocer.

As the voice of the retail food industry since 1922, Progressive Grocer’s core audience targets top management at headquarters and key decision makers at store-level. From chain supermarkets to regional and local independent grocers, supercenters, wholesaler distributors, manufacturers and other supply chain trading partners, readers rely on Progressive Grocer for its authoritative, comprehensive, relevant, research-based editorial content and its anticipation, reporting and interpreting the grocery industry’s top trends and information for the industry.

“We’re honored to be named one of the Best Independent Grocers of 2024 by Progressive Grocer and so grateful for our entire grocery family,” reads a statement from Nugget Markets as they reacted to news of the honor on social media.

According to Progressive Grocer’s announcement of the 21 grocers that were honored nationwide for 2024, Nugget Markets was distinguished by its RAVE culture, which stands for Respect, Value, Appreciate Everyone. It starts with hiring associates with a desire to serve and flows through to Nugget’s customers, who are always referred to as guests.

“To that end, Nugget staffs knowledgeable associates, known as specialists, in every store department to share their information with guests, providing an exceptional shopping experience,” reads the announcement. “Another unique aspect of its business model is creative and attractive merchandising: The grocer’s beautiful stores highlight unusual or local items, as well as showcasing great deals. Beyond the walls of those stores, Nugget is a pillar of its communities, donating to local food banks and participating in area events. It also awards scholarships to associates attending school, or to the children of current associates.”

The announcement went on to detail how Nugget employs a sophisticated buying system that enables it to take advantage of best-cost products and procure merchandise in its own warehouse. The retailer networks its own facility with its primary supplier to lower delivery costs to each store, allowing to promote more to its customers. This continual quest to drive costs out of the system enables the grocer to compete better in the markets that it serves.

Family owned and operated since 1926, Nugget Markets has been offering an extraordinary grocery experience since the very beginning. Father and son team, Will and Mack Stille, set the bar with their focus on quality and service, and now nearly 100 years later, the fourth and fifth generation of Stilles are keeping that commitment as strong as ever.

One step into their doors and guests often feel something unique and special. What is it? According to Nugget it is their people. “Our amazing associates are more than a team, they’re our family. Our dynamic family culture celebrates everyone’s diverse talents, can-do attitude and fun-loving spirit, because it’s truly our associates who make every visit to our stores a special one,” states their company profile.

Nugget Markets is a known as a trendsetting grocer with 16 locations across Northern California, including locally here in El Dorado Hills and headquarters just down the freeway in Davis. They offer an extensive selection of top-quality perishables, chef-prepared foods, organics/specialty grocery items and conventional goods all in a beautiful European marketplace setting.

One key point in common among Progressive Grocer’s class of Outstanding Independents in 2024 is the deep connection each of them have to the neighborhoods where their stores are located and where, very often, they live as well.

“This is of course the main differentiator of independent grocers: their ability to anticipate the needs of area shoppers and create a long-lasting bond in a way that larger players with their extensive demographic research and carefully selected focus groups, can only envy,”explains Progressive Grocer. “Whether that connection is forged through offering local products, providing time-saving services tailored to the regional population or supporting area organizations working to make a difference, indies have a natural advantage when it comes to bonding with customers. The 21 honorees included in the following pages have raised that asset into an art form.”
