The City of Rancho Cordova, alongside state and neighboring local leaders including the City of Folsom , marked a pivotal moment Wednesday as the U.S. Department of Transportation officially awarded its previously announced $25 million allocation toward the Capital SouthEast Connector project.
This initiative aims to significantly revamp Grant Line Road, a venerable thoroughfare dating back 60 years, into a state-of-the-art expressway.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg confirmed the funding, part of the Federal Highway Administration’s broader $1.8 billion RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure Sustainably and Equity) Grant program, aimed at supporting transformative transportation projects nationwide.
“The Capital SouthEast Connector Expressway Project is a remarkable example of how partnerships between cities, counties, the state, and the federal government can solve problems that improve safety, livability, air quality, and local and regional economies,” said Congressman Kevin Kiley who was part of Wednesday’s celebration as officials accepted the ceremonial big check near the future expressway. “I proudly supported this grant which will play a pivotal role in transforming Grant Line Road into an expressway, addressing longstanding safety concerns, and improving traffic conditions on this heavily traveled route. With this, we can significantly reduce collision risks, alleviate congestion, and ensure safer travel for all commuters.”
The Grant Line Road Safety Improvement Project is among 148 projects earmarked for funding, addressing critical safety enhancements and expanding multimodal transportation options along a 3.5-mile stretch from White Rock Road to Chrysanthy Road.
With an estimated initial phase cost of $55.5 million, additional funding contributions will stem from the Sacramento Transportation Authority, the California Transportation Committee, Measure A funding, as well as commitments from Sacramento County and the City of Rancho Cordova.
The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) played a pivotal role in supporting the grant application.
The RAISE program prioritizes projects that advance federal goals of safety, equity, climate sustainability, and workforce development, underlining its broad impact on local and regional communities. The enhancements to Grant Line Road are expected to mitigate collision risks, alleviate traffic congestion, and ensure safer travel conditions for commuters.
