ORANGEVALE — A man was fatally shot by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies Saturday night after allegedly opening fire during a standoff in an Orangevale neighborhood, authorities said.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a man firing a gun in his backyard around 7:30 p.m. in the 8600 block of Blythe Avenue. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect, but he refused to cooperate.

As the situation escalated, a SWAT team was called to the scene. Authorities evacuated nearby residents while others were advised to shelter in place as a precaution.

The standoff came to a deadly conclusion just before 10 p.m. when the suspect reportedly fired at deputies. Deputies returned fire The Sacramento County Sherifff’s Office had confirmed the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the exchange of gunfire, the sheriff’s office said in a briefing at the scene.

The investigation is currently active and a heavy law enforcement presence at the scene. Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect pending notification of next of kin.Residents who were evacuated have been allowed to return to their homes.
