The Shenendoah Valley is about to get a taste of smooth California sound when iconic soft rockers Pablo Cruise dock at Helwig Winery on Saturday, June 21, for what promises to be a signature evening of music under the stars.

As part of the area winery’s popular summer concert series, the band’s performance brings decades of chart-topping hits, rich musical history, and West Coast energy to one of Amador County’s most scenic venues.

Pablo Cruise exploded onto the scene in the mid-1970s with a breezy, feel-good sound that helped define the emerging “yacht rock” genre—a blend of soft rock, soul, jazz, and pop built around precision musicianship and uplifting melodies. Their 1977 breakthrough album A Place in the Sun and the 1978 follow-up Worlds Awaycatapulted the band into the mainstream with singles like “Whatcha Gonna Do (When She Says Goodbye?)”“Love Will Find a Way,” “Don’t Want to Live Without It”, and “I Want You Tonight.”

The band originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, created by members from the groups Stoneground and It’s a Beautiful Day. Founding members David Jenkins (guitar, vocals) and Cory Lerios (keyboards, vocals) remain at the helm today, and they’re joined by an all-star lineup of talent that gives the band’s live shows renewed power and polish. Together, the group creates an atmosphere that’s equal parts nostalgia and electrifying performance.

In their early days, Pablo Cruise was known for high-profile television appearances, relentless touring across the U.S., Canada, and Japan, and even breaking Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in Nevada. They were also the first rock act to perform in venues that had previously only hosted traditional or country artists, like the Grand Ole Opry and casino showrooms.

After taking a nearly 20-year hiatus in the late ’80s, the group reunited in 2005 and has remained active on the touring circuit ever since. Their chemistry is palpable on stage, bolstered by the addition of powerhouse vocalist Robbie Wyckoff, whose credits include five years touring with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. Bassist Larry Antonino brings a résumé packed with appearances alongside Air Supply, Barry Manilow, and Jeff Beck. Holding down rhythm duties is seasoned drummer Sergio Gonzalez, who has performed for dignitaries like the Queen of England and boasts experience with Jennifer Lopez and Keb’ Mo’.

The band has lost none of its live appeal. Recent concerts have highlighted Pablo Cruise’s signature blend of tight harmonies, breezy lyrics, and dynamic instrumentation. “It’s good to be live,” they proudly proclaim in the title of their live album and DVD, and audiences continue to agree.
