Collision at Folsom Boulevard and Iron Road shuts down light rail service for unknown duration

FOLSOM- Emergency crews have responded to the scene of a fatal traffic collision Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Folsom Boulevard and Iron Point Road, where light rail service was shut down for several hours as emergency operations and an investigation were conducted.

One person was killed in the collision. According to emergency personnel on scene, the fatality was a bystander and not an occupant of the vehicle involved. Authorities said the driver of the car also suffered injuries were transported to UC Davis Medical Center, though their conditions were unknown as of Thursday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:53 p.m. as multiple units from the Folsom Fire Department and Folsom Police were dispatched to the following multiple 911 calls reporting that a vehicle had left the Folsom Boulevard, traveled across the intersection at Iron Point Road where it then entered the parking area of the light rail station, struck a tree and continued towards the light rail boarding platform where one bystander, reportedly waiting to board the train, was struck and killed before crashing off the platform and partially blocked the tracks.

Upon arrival to the scene firefighters were faced with a Tesla that was precariously lodged onto the light rail platform structure and at least two victims nearby. Personnel on the scene reported that the driver of the vehicle was a female and was able to self extricate from the car. At this time it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash or an unknown medical emergency as the investigation is underway. Light rail service through the area was immediately halted as personnel stabilized the scene.

A total of two engine companies from the Folsom Fire Department assisted with the incident along with Folsom’s Truck 34. two medic units were dispatched as well as one batallion chief unit. Fire personnel were cleared from the scene as of 3:46 p.m. The crash investigation is being conducted by the Folsom Police Department in coordination with the Sacramento Regional Transit District.

Authorities have not released information regarding the incident at this time as it remains under investigation.
