EL DORADO HILLS – A prescribed burn is planned this week near the town of Latrobe as part of the Deer Creek Hills Vegetation Management Project, according to Cal Fire’s Amador-El Dorado Unit.

In coordination with the Sacramento Valley Conservancy, Cal Fire will conduct the prescribed burn from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10 through June 12, dependent on favorable weather conditions and any restrictions issued by the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District. Smoke is expected to be visible throughout the area during the burn.

The effort will target approximately 250 acres of grassland and oak woodland located west of Latrobe in Sacramento County. Officials say the operation is aimed at reducing hazardous vegetation and establishing a strategic fuel break to enhance fire protection for surrounding communities.

The prescribed burn will also serve as a hands-on training opportunity for new firefighters, who will gain experience in fire suppression techniques in a controlled environment. In addition, Cal Fire will conduct a concurrent wildland fire investigation course focused on determining wildfire causes and investigative protocol.

All Cal Fire prescribed burns are evaluated on an hourly basis using a Go/No-Go checklist that factors in weather, resource availability, and regional incident activity. If conditions become unsafe or unsuitable, the operation will be immediately suspended.
