The quick actions of a Folsom resident and a neighbor helped firefighters contain a structure fire to the garage area of a home Thursday evening.
At approximately 8:55 p.m., units from the Folsom Fire Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Boxford Square after a 911 call reported a fire in the garage of the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the garage area.
After ensuring the home had been fully evacuated, firefighters confirmed the fire had been contained to the garage, with no extension into the living area. This was largely due to the quick actions of the homeowner and a neighbor.
Upon discovering the fire, the homeowner reportedly grabbed a garden hose, while the neighbor used a fire extinguisher to help contain the flames as firefighters were en route. The fire was completing extinguished within 8 minutes of arrival by firefighters, according to the department.
Firefighters were still investigating the incident an hour after their arrival to check for extension of the residence using thermal imaging cameras and gas detectors to find any remaining evidence of harmful gasses. The fire reportedly started near an interior garage light fixture on the wall.
This incident serves as a reminder to residents about the importance of having properly maintained fire extinguishers on hand. In this case, the preparedness of the homeowner and neighbor helped prevent extensive damage to the home.
Thursday’s incident was handled by Folsom’s Truck 35, Engine 37 , Engine 38 and Engine 34. Units that were dispatched from El Dorado Hills were cancelled once it was determined sufficient resources were on scene.
