A long-anticipated revitalization of the Folsom Bike Park at Cummings Park is officially underway, as a new public-private partnership brings fresh momentum, nationally recognized expertise and renewed community investment to one of the city’s most popular outdoor recreation spaces.

The project is being led through a partnership between the Folsom Auburn Trail Riders Action Coalition and the City of Folsom, marking a significant step forward in restoring and reimagining the public bike skills park that has long served riders of all ages across the community. Local advocates and city officials say the effort reflects a shared commitment to safe recreation, youth engagement and the long-term stewardship of Folsom’s outdoor amenities.

Plans for the revitalized park call for a modern, progressive riding environment that welcomes beginners while still challenging experienced riders. Elements under consideration include a pump track, rollers and berms, progressive skills zones, balance features and jump lines, all designed to promote safe riding and confidence-building while encouraging healthy outdoor activity and community connection.

The bike park renovation is located alongside the established the Cummings Family Skate & Bike Park, a 21,000-square-foot skate facility designed by Wormhoudt Inc. that has earned high marks from skaters regionally and beyond. The skate park, which includes bowls ranging from four to nine feet in depth, street-style features and shaded gathering areas, was created with direct input from local skaters during pre-construction design workshops. City officials say the bike park renovation will build on that same collaborative approach.

FATRAC officials described the bike park project as shovel-ready and uniquely positioned to fill an important gap in Folsom’s recreation offerings. In a public statement, the organization said the revitalization supports youth engagement, environmental stewardship and healthy activity, while reinforcing the city’s reputation as a regional destination for trail and outdoor sports enthusiasts.

A major catalyst for the project came through a generous private gift from Claudia Cummings, paired with a $10,000 matching grant, allowing the renovation effort to move forward. With funding secured to begin construction, work is expected to ramp up this fall, with a grand reopening targeted for summer 2026. Corporate sponsors and local businesses are also being invited to participate through tiered sponsorship opportunities that include onsite signage, social media recognition and involvement in reopening celebrations.

Leading the redesign of the bike park are two internationally respected figures in freeride mountain biking, Randy Spangler and Greg Watts, whose combined experience spans elite competition, course design and professional bike park construction.

Spangler is widely regarded as a pioneer of freeride mountain biking, having competed at the highest levels of slopestyle and dirt jump competitions and participating in the earliest Red Bull Rampage events in the early 2000s. He later became a Rampage judge and professional builder, shaping some of the sport’s most iconic courses. The original Folsom Bike Park was among his earliest designs, and he has returned to the project with the goal of honoring its roots while giving it a complete modern reset.

Watts brings his own decorated history to the partnership. Known for pushing the limits of the sport, he was the first rider to land a double backflip and a flip whip on a mountain bike and captured the Crankworx Slopestyle title in 2009. After more than a decade competing at the sport’s highest level, Watts has shifted his focus to design and construction, building bike parks and trail systems across the country. Project leaders say his creativity and technical precision will be key to delivering a park that challenges riders while prioritizing safety and progression.

Together, Spangler and Watts are tasked with delivering a park that reflects world-class design standards while remaining accessible to local riders. Organizers say their involvement ensures the revitalized park will not only meet current needs, but inspire the next generation of cyclists.

Long-term maintenance and oversight of the bike park will be handled by FATRAC volunteers in partnership with the City of Folsom Parks & Recreation Department, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the project. Community members are also expected to play a direct role, with fundraising efforts planned in the coming months to help support construction, programming and future upkeep.

Supporters emphasize that community involvement remains central to the project’s success, noting that donations of any size directly fund construction, maintenance and youth-focused programming. Residents are encouraged to follow project updates, volunteer opportunities and grand opening announcements through the official Folsom Bike Park Facebook page and FATRAC’s website.

As construction begins and plans take shape, local organizers say the revitalized bike park represents more than a rebuilt facility. They describe it as a reinvestment in Folsom’s outdoor culture, driven by community pride, public-private collaboration and a shared vision for accessible recreation that will serve residents for decades to come.
