Hundreds of animals across the region are hoping for a second chance at love this weekend, and Sacramento County is making it easier than ever for families to make that happen. On Saturday, June 7, Bradshaw Animal Shelter will take part in a statewide Adopt-a-Pet Day effort, offering free adoptions to help find loving homes for its many dogs, cats, puppies, kittens—and even a few rabbits and guinea pigs.

The event runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bradshaw Animal Shelter, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road in Sacramento. All adoption fees will be waived, thanks to a sponsorship by CalAnimals, as part of a unified campaign to reduce shelter overpopulation across California.

Each adopted animal will come fully vetted and ready to go home. That includes being spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped for identification, and—if adopted by a Sacramento County resident—accompanied by a one-year pet license.

According to organizers, even a small increase in adoption rates could make a massive impact nationwide. “If just 6% more people chose to adopt from shelters instead of buying from breeders or pet stores, shelters across the country would be empty,” the county shared in a campaign statement. “Every kennel would be open. Every animal would have a home.”

The initiative not only hopes to place animals into forever homes, but also raise awareness of the urgent need to adopt amid high intake rates at local shelters.

Organizers encourage the public to stop by and meet potential pets in person, bring a friend or family member who may be ready to adopt, or simply help spread the word online to help these animals find homes.
