A Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office deputy tragically lost his life Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash while driving to work amid stormy conditions in the south area of Sacramento County.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as James Caravallo, a 19-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, who was traveling to the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center at the time of the collision.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported just before 6 a.m. on Franklin Boulevard north of Point Pleasant Road, about two miles south of Elk Grove. Investigators said Caravallo was driving southbound when his reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and then struck a utility pole amid wet and windy conditions brought on by the recent storm. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, according the California Highway Patrol.

“Deputy James Caravallo was tragically killed in a solo vehicle car crash on his way to work,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “He was a dedicated employee who proudly served our agency for 19 years. Our hearts are with Deputy Caravallo’s family, and we ask the public to keep Deputy Caravallo’s loved ones and our Sheriff’s Office family in their thoughts and prayers.”

The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
