Sacramento County has reached a major milestone on this day, celebrating its 175th anniversary, officially known as its “Demisemiseptcentennial.” This significant occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on the county’s rich history, its contributions to California, and the foundation laid by those who came before and county officials are looking to celebrate the milestone over the months to come with the community getting involved.
Sacramento County was founded February 18 in 1850, making it one of California’s original 27 counties. Established in response to a growing population, the county quickly became a hub of commerce, governance, and innovation. Over the decades, it has continuously evolved to meet the needs of its residents with integrity and forward-thinking service.
“This year, Sacramento County will be celebrating its 175th anniversary on February 18, 2025—our Demisemiseptcentennial celebration,” said Sacramento County Executive David Villaneuva. “It’s a time to reflect on our rich history and the foundation laid by those who came before us.”
At its founding, Sacramento County had a population of just over 9,000 residents. Today, it serves more than 1.5 million people, providing essential services that enhance the quality of life for all who call it home. The county’s responsibilities have expanded significantly under the County Charter, which was established in 1933 and remains in use today. Services range from law enforcement and health care to transportation and waste management, reflecting the county’s commitment to its residents.
The discovery of gold in 1848 put Sacramento County on the map, drawing fortune seekers and pioneers from around the world. Sacramento quickly became a key center for commerce and agriculture, a major supply distribution point, and a transportation hub for wagon trains, riverboats, and stagecoaches. The county played a crucial role in the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad, which later joined the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah in 1869, forming the first transcontinental railroad and revolutionizing travel and commerce across the nation.
“Since its incorporation in 1850, Sacramento County has been dedicated to serving its people, becoming the cornerstone of health, welfare, justice, and essential services we know today,” said Phil Serna, Chairman of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. “From enhancing our regional parks to managing municipal services, from leading critical waste management and recycling initiatives to ensuring fair and accountable elections, we have always been a responsive and committed part of your lives.”
Throughout the 20th century, Sacramento County saw rapid advancements in transportation and industry. The rise of automobiles in the early 1900s led to the construction of major roads and bridges, including the Lincoln Highway, one of the first transcontinental roadways. Aviation also took root in the region, with early airfields leading to the development of today’s Sacramento County Airport System, including Sacramento International Airport.
During World War I, Sacramento was home to a pilot training school and airplane manufacturing, setting the stage for the region’s long-standing role in aviation. Several military installations, including Mather and McClellan Air Force Bases, played key roles in national defense before being repurposed as thriving business centers in the modern era.
Today, Sacramento County is home to seven incorporated cities: Sacramento (1850), Isleton (1923), Folsom (1946), Galt (1946), Citrus Heights (1997), Elk Grove (2000), and Rancho Cordova (2003). Government remains a dominant employment sector in the county, with federal, state, and local offices located throughout the region. Other key industries include education, information technology, health services, transportation, and leisure and hospitality.
