A tradition of honoring a local legend in dirt track racing returns to the Placerville Speedway this Saturday, April 12, as the annual “Tilford Tribute” honors the life and legacy of late Folsom resident, businessman, and racing icon Donnie Tilford.
Hosted at the historic quarter-mile clay oval at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, the Tilford Tribute brings together drivers and fans alike to pay homage to one of the most beloved and successful stock car racers in track history. The evening of racing action will feature the Kings Meats Ltd. Late Models, Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks, Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks, and a special appearance by the West Coast Pro Stocks in their only stop at Placerville this season.
“This weekend’s event will be a perfect way to honor one of Placerville Speedway’s great legends,” said track promoter Scott Russell. “We look forward to hosting the show while showcasing some of our most competitive divisions. We hope everyone can make it out for what should be a tremendous night of racing at the Donnie Tilford Tribute.”
Tilford, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 58 from heart complications, began racing at Placerville Speedway in 1971 at just 17 years old. His career spanned two decades, during which he amassed an unmatched 71 stock car victories at the track—still the all-time record. His aggressive but respectful driving style earned him admiration both on and off the track. After stepping away from the driver’s seat in 1991, Tilford remained a vital presence in the sport, mentoring and sponsoring many young racers, including members of his own family.
Beyond the racetrack, Tilford made an equally lasting impact in the community. A longtime Folsom resident, he owned and operated Tilford Excavating and Engineering, a company responsible for helping develop countless local properties. From transforming raw land into thriving businesses, Tilford’s work shaped the Folsom area both figuratively and literally.
Tilford was remembered by those close to him not only as a racer, but as a true community builder. Whether it was lending a hand to help someone get their car to the track or using his skills to turn bare land into thriving developments, he was known for giving everything he had to others.
Saturday’s tribute not only honors Tilford’s storied past, but it also ushers in an exciting night of racing after recent weather delays. The evening marks point race number three in the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber Championship season and offers fans a full program of high-octane action.
Grandstand seating is general admission (except for reserved spots held by season ticket holders). Adult tickets are $18, seniors 62+, military and juniors 12-17 are $16, kids 6-11 are $8, and children five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at EventSprout.
The pit gate opens at noon, with front gates opening to the public at 4 p.m. The Hirst Home Team Happy Hour takes place until 6 p.m., with live music and discounted Coors products at the beer booth. Racing begins with hot laps at 5:15 p.m., followed by qualifying and main event action. Fans unable to attend in person can tune in via live stream at CaliDirt.TV.

As the engines roar to life on Saturday night, the legacy of Donnie Tilford will once again take center stage—reminding everyone of the mark left by a man who was not only a champion on the track, but also in the lives he touched along the way.
