The City of Folsom is gearing up for its 12th annual Community Service Day, set to take place Saturday, September 20, and organizers are now calling on residents to submit project proposals for one of the event’s most meaningful programs—the Neighbors Helping Seniors Initiative.
Each year, Community Service Day brings together thousands of volunteers to complete dozens of projects that strengthen and uplift the Folsom community. Among the many efforts, Neighbors Helping Seniors stands out by focusing directly on assisting older adults with light exterior home maintenance they may no longer be able to tackle on their own.
Folsom seniors—or those who know someone in need—are invited to nominate a project for consideration. The work is completed entirely by volunteers and must be located outside the home. Examples of eligible tasks include light landscaping such as weeding, pruning, and leaf or debris removal; minor fence repairs; exterior paint touch-ups; and other small maintenance fixes, all subject to approval.
“There’s no shortage of passion and care when our community comes together,” said organizers. “Sometimes, a little help can make a big difference. Whether it’s trimming back overgrown shrubs or touching up a fence, these small efforts help our senior neighbors maintain safe and welcoming homes.”
The Neighbors Helping Seniors program will accept up to 50 projects this year. If additional requests come in, a steering committee will evaluate whether more resources can be allocated. Residents are encouraged to act soon—project proposals are being accepted through Thursday, August 8.

As Community Service Day approaches, the city is also preparing for dozens of other community improvement projects that span public parks, trails, schools, and local nonprofits. But the Neighbors Helping Seniors initiative continues to remind residents that caring starts right at home—by lending a hand to those who’ve helped build the community over the years.
