FOLSOM – Multiple emergency units responded to a Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) at California State Prison, Sacramento in Folsom on Wednesday morning, after an altercation among inmates resulted in multiple casualties in what prison officials catagorized as a riot.

The Folsom Fire Department initially dispatched units to the prison just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, following reports by prison staff of serious injuries that were beyond manageable by the prison infirmary. Due to the number of patients and the severity of their conditions, officials upgraded the response to a full MCI response.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are currently investigating the incident which occurred in the prison’s yard area and involved several inmates with homemade weapons.

“California State Prison, Sacramento, is actively investigating an incident that occurred earlier today on Facility A’s main yard,” CDCR said in an email response to Folsom Times” At 9:56 a.m., a Code Three riot was declared, involving approximately 40 incarcerated individuals, some of whom were armed with improvised weapons.”

Additional emergency resources were called in from neighboring agencies, including El Dorado Hills Fire Department and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. In total, six medic units arrived on the scene to assess, treat, and transport the injured. Several patients were rushed to local trauma centers with injuries ranging from moderate to critical, including multiple stab wounds suffered by at least six inmates. according to emergency radio traffic. Several those injured were transported to UC Davis Medical Center for attention. The current conditions of the injured inmates have not been released.

“Prison staff responded swiftly, utilizing chemical agents and non-lethal weapons to restore order. A total of 11 improvised weapons were recovered, and five incarcerated individuals sustained injuries requiring transfer to outside medical facilities. Their injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening,” added officials 

A total of 22 fire personnel responded to assist with the large scale incident. The facility was put in lockdown prior to the firefighters arrival.

This is the third incident involving significant injuries in Folsom in as many weeks. All of those injured were male inmates and no prison staff members or first responders were seriously injured. Officials added that none of the inmate injuries are considered to be life threatening.

“The safety and security of staff, incarcerated individuals, and the institution remain our highest priority. The situation is now under control, and all involved individuals will be remanded to restricted housing pending an investigation. Movement at the institution is currently limited,” CDCR officials added.
