Under the Sea theme, 5K run and community spirit return to shore of Folsom Lake on March 7
GRANITE BAY — A splash of courage, a wave of creativity and a whole lot of heart will return to the shoreline in just a few weeks as registration is now underway for the 2026 Greater Sacramento Area Polar Plunge and Runs, benefiting Special Olympics Northern California.
Set for Saturday, March 7, the annual event will once again take over Granite Bay Main Beach, inviting participants to run, walk, costume up or take a chilly plunge into the waters of Folsom Lake — all in support of Special Olympics athletes across Northern California. This year’s “Under the Sea” theme adds an extra layer of fun and creativity, encouraging plungers to channel mermaids, sea creatures, nautical legends and all things aquatic before facing the cold.
The Polar Plunge has become one of the region’s most spirited winter traditions, drawing individuals, families, businesses, schools and community organizations together for a cause that extends far beyond the splash itself. Participants can choose how bold they want to be, from charging straight into the lake to easing in with friends, or even staying dry by registering as a “chicken.” Chickens are excused from plunging but still participate fully in fundraising incentives, costume contests and the day’s festivities along the shoreline.
Plungers can take part on their own or rally coworkers, classmates, neighbors or family members to form a team. Teams are encouraged to name a fearless captain and come up with a creative squad name, adding to the playful atmosphere that defines the event. Costumes are strongly encouraged and often become one of the most memorable elements of the day, transforming Granite Bay Main Beach into a lively display of color, laughter and anticipation as the countdown to the plunge begins.
For those who prefer to start the day on solid ground, the Polar Plunge also features a scenic and challenging 5K timed trail run held before the plunge begins. The course winds through the Granite Bay trails and offers hills, uneven terrain and sweeping lake views, providing a rugged test for experienced runners. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age category. Participants looking for a more relaxed option can join the one-mile fun run and walk, which welcomes all ages and fitness levels and offers a casual way to be part of the day’s energy.

Beyond the fun and spectacle, the heart of the event remains its mission. Participation in the Polar Plunge and Runs requires fundraising to support Special Olympics Northern California, with entry options available for individuals, teams, schools and community groups. Complete details on registration, fundraising minimums and participation levels are available online athttps://p2p.onecause.com/sacramento-polar-plunge/challenge. Every dollar raised directly supports Special Olympics Northern California, which provides year-round sports training, competitions, health programs, educational opportunities and athlete leadership development at no cost to families.
Event organizers have set a fundraising goal of $100,000 for the 2026 event, and early momentum is already building. As of this week, more than $11,253 has been raised, representing 11 percent of the overall goal, with 85 participants and 20 teams already signed up more than a month ahead of the plunge. Organizers note that for every $500 donated, the life of a Special Olympics athlete is enriched through access to programming, competition and inclusive opportunities, with 22 athletes already positively impacted by early contributions.
The event runs from 7:45 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, and takes place at Granite Bay Main Beach, located at 8099 Douglas Boulevard. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to check in, cheer on runners, enjoy the high-energy atmosphere and prepare for the plunge.
