Effective immediately, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has placed all Level III and Level IV institutions, ncluding both Folsom State Prison and California State Prison-Sacramento, on a modified program due to a recent spike in violent incidents.
The move comes in response to a troubling rise in violence directed at correctional staff and incarcerated individuals, alongside an increase in overdose cases and contraband discoveries within prison facilities. CDCR officials said the action is precautionary while a full investigation into these incidents is underway.
A total of 22 institutions across California are currently operating under the modified program. Among those impacted are Folsom State Prison and California State Prison-Sacramento. Other affected facilities include California Medical Facility, California Men’s Colony, California Correctional Institution, California State Prison-Los Angeles County, California State Prison-Corcoran, California State Prison-Centinela, California State Prison-Solano, Calipatria State Prison, High Desert State Prison, Kern Valley State Prison, Mule Creek State Prison, North Kern State Prison, Pelican Bay State Prison, Pleasant Valley State Prison, Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Salinas Valley State Prison, Sierra Conservation Camp, Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison-Corcoran, and Wasco State Prison.
While under the modified program, individuals housed at these facilities will continue to receive essential services, including access to medical care, legal proceedings, and critical appointments. Meals will be delivered directly to housing units, and all internal movement, including shower access, will be carried out in a controlled and secure manner.
However, in-person visitation is suspended during this period, along with all phone and ViaPath tablet communications.
CDCR stated that the modified program will remain in place until the ongoing review is complete and emphasized its commitment to institutional safety. “CDCR remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety and security of its institutions and is dedicated to protecting the well-being of both staff and those in its custody,” the department noted in a statement.
