Popular state parks vehicle pass will remain available at Folsom Public Library and others statewide

California residents will continue to enjoy free access to over 200 state parks and beaches through their local library, thanks to the extension of the California State Library Parks Pass Program through December 2026. The extension was officially approved in the state’s 2025–2026 budget, ensuring that thousands of library patrons—including those at the Folsom Public Library—can continue to check out this popular pass free of charge.

Launched in 2022, the California State Library Parks Pass Program began with just 5,000 passes. Due to overwhelming demand, it has since grown to provide 33,000 vehicle day-use passes available across approximately 1,100 library branches statewide, including tribal libraries. The program not only expands equitable access to California’s natural landscapes but also supports tribal communities in reconnecting with ancestral lands.

The pass is one of the most checked-out items in the entire California State Library system. Any California resident with a library card can borrow a pass, allowing free vehicle entry to participating state parks.

In addition to the library program, California State Parks continues to offer several free or discounted passes for eligible residents. The California State Park Adventure Pass gives fourth graders and their families free entry to 54 select parks for an entire year. The Golden Bear Pass Program offers annual free day-use access to more than 200 parks for families receiving CalWORKs, individuals who receive supplemental security income, and income-eligible Californians over the age of 62.

The Distinguished Veteran Pass provides a lifetime of free entry, camping, and boating privileges for honorably discharged California veterans who meet certain qualifications. The Disabled Discount Pass, available for $3.50, offers a lifetime 50% discount on vehicle day-use, camping, and boating fees for individuals with permanent disabilities. For older adults, the Senior Golden Bear Pass—available for $20 annually—grants Californians age 62 and older, along with a spouse or domestic partner, free entry to many state parks during non-peak seasons.

Folsom residents interested in borrowing a pass can visit the Folsom Public Library with a valid library card. For complete information on all available passes and eligibility requirements, visit parks.ca.gov/Passes.
