The City of Folsom took another official step toward becoming a regional healthcare hub Wednesday as city leaders, the Folsom Chamber, and officials from Sutter Health gathered with members of the community to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the its Folsom Care Complex—a state-of-the-art facility that will bring additional medical care to not only the City of Folsom, but to the Highway 50 corridor and surrounding communities.

Located across East Bidwell Street from the Palladio shopping center, the $145 million, three-story, 106,500-square-foot complex is was made possible due to a partnership between Sutter Health and Elliott Homes. It will be the centerpiece of a broader development that includes a mix of homes, commercial offices, and one of Folsom’s premier retail destinations.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks an exciting step forward, and we’re honored to be part of it,” said Elliott Homes Vice President of Project Development Price Walker. “This is one of the few partnerships Elliott Homes has entered into, and we’re thrilled to be collaborating with Sutter Health on a project that will bring expanded, high-quality healthcare to our community. It’s a proud moment for all of us.”

Set to be completed in 2027, the new complex will offer a range of services—including a Sutter Cancer Center with both infusion and radiation therapy, a same-day outpatient surgery center, a full-service urgent care with in-house lab and imaging, and more than two dozen medical specialists ranging from OB/GYNs to cardiologists and neurologists.

“We’re proud to expand access to high-quality primary and specialty care for the growing communities along the Highway 50 Corridor and surrounding areas,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “Building on our more than a century of caring for Northern Californians, and with our roots right here in Sacramento, today’s groundbreaking reflects our continued investment in the broader region. It’s the latest example of our systemwide commitment to deliver coordinated, convenient, world-class care close to home.”

Among the most anticipated components of the new development is the Sutter Cancer Center, which will occupy the top floors of the complex and feature scenic views of the Palladio and Sierra foothills. Patients will have access to advanced infusion and radiation services in a calming, thoughtfully designed environment, with a private entrance to safeguard immunocompromised individuals and support better infection control.

“This project reflects Sutter Health’s vision to deliver the most connected, comprehensive care,” said Rachael McKinney, Sutter Health’s Greater Sacramento Division president. “By expanding specialty care close to home, we’re not just increasing access — we’re setting a higher standard for local healthcare. It’s a key step toward serving 1 million patients across our region by 2030.”.”

In addition to the cancer center, the complex will also include a robust ambulatory surgical center that allows specialty physicians and general surgeons to perform outpatient procedures. A newly expanded Sutter Urgent Care will be housed within the facility, offering walk-in services connected to Sutter Imaging and Sutter Lab for a streamlined, one-stop-shop experience.

To support growing demand, Sutter Health is also expanding its existing primary care center, Sutter Medical Plaza Folsom, located just 1.5 miles away at 2575 East Bidwell Street. That facility will double in size to accommodate more pediatric and primary care appointments, while its current urgent care operations will shift to the new complex once completed.

With the addition of more specialty physicians to the campus, the goal is to provide increased access to surgical procedures and advanced care.

“As a physician, I’m excited to see the new Sutter Folsom Care Complex bring together primary, urgent and specialty care, including cancer, imaging and lab services in one integrated setting,” said Sutter Medical Group Chief Medical Officer Dr. Karun Grossman. “This coordination will help us diagnose and treat patients more efficiently, reduce delays and improve outcomes. I’m especially enthusiastic about bringing top specialists to Folsom so patients can receive expert cancer and other care close to where they live and work.”

When the Sutter Folsom Care Complex opens, it will bring together 27 new specialty and primary care physicians alongside four existing physicians, significantly expanding access to medical services for Folsom and surrounding communities. The comprehensive facility will offer a wide range of care, including primary care, urgent care, heart and vascular services, dermatology, endocrinology, ear, nose and throat care, gastroenterology, imaging and lab services, neuroscience, women’s health, cancer care, orthopedics, pain management, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and general surgery.

“This planned care complex and the expanded primary-care services in Folsom exemplify Sutter’s mission to provide comprehensive, integrated and connected care for getting and staying well,” said Rachael McKinney, Sutter’s Greater Sacramento Market president. “Our aim is to deliver seamless, convenient care to support patients at every stage of their healthcare journey.”

Construction on the facility is scheduled to begin by the end of 2025, with completion expected in 2026.

The Sutter Folsom Care Complex represents another significant step in Sutter Health’s ongoing effort to bring care closer to home. As part of a broader plan to launch dozens of new care centers across Northern California, Sutter opened six care sites in 2024 and is growing that number nearly fourfold in 2025 with 23 care sites set to open this year and at least another 23 next year.

The health system is strategically expanding its footprint to make it easier for patients to connect with both primary and specialty care. These new locations are designed to reduce travel times, expand access to essential services and ensure more timely, convenient care for the communities it serves. In addition to Folsom, in the Greater Sacramento region, Sutter is expanding access to primary and specialty care in the communities of Elk Grove and Roseville, as well as the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento.
