With unusual October triple-digit temperatures hitting the area the 20th annual Bark ‘n’ Splash Bash at Folsom’s Steve Miklos Aquatic Center drew a crowd of excited dogs and their equally enthusiastic owners on Saturday. Hundreds of attendees and their furry pals enjoyed a splash-filled day, celebrating two decades of canine fun at this beloved community event.
The Bark ‘n’ Splash Bash first began in 2003. The event gives dogs a rare chance to take over the city’s pool just before the aquatic center undergoes its annual deep cleaning. This seasonal maintenance allows the facility to host the event, turning the normally human populated pools into a haven for playful pups.
All dogs in attendance were required to provide proof of rabies vaccinations, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved. After checking in at the front gate and provided the propper documentation and proof of licensing, it was off to the water Saturday where the pool, literally went to the dogs for several hours.
“It’s a great way to let the dogs cool off, especially in this heat,” said Julie Anderson, who brought her two Labradors, Bella and Max. “They absolutely love the water, and it’s great to see them having so much fun with other dogs.”
Even with the scorching temperatures, the atmosphere was light-hearted and full of laughter from the sidelines from the humans, who watched as dogs of all shapes and sizes splashed around the aquatic center.
Sarah Lee, attended with her Jack Russell Terrier, Loki for the very first time, after seeing the even featured last week in Folsom Times news. “It’s his first time here, and he’s loving it,” said Lee. I wasn’t sure how he’d react to being around so many other dogs, but he’s made a ton of new friends!”
For many, the event has become a tradition. “We come every year—it’s like a mini vacation for my dog,” said David Martinez, who brought his Golden Retriever, Max. “Max practically jumps out of the car before we even come to a stop when we pull up. It’s the highlight of our fall, especially for him.”
As the Bark ‘n’ Splash Bash marks its 20th anniversary, it remains a testament to Folsom’s pet-friendly spirit. In the midst of the October heat wave, the strong turnout and energy made it clear just how much this event means to the community. As the event wound down, exhausted but happy dogs were seen vigorously shaking and sharing the water with their owners and anyone else near them, while wagging their tails as they left, likely dreaming of next year’s splashy celebration and adventure.
“Thank you to all the furry friends and their human companions who joined in the fun today. We look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event,” shared the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department, which plans and manages the event each year. We’d like to thank Kaiser Permanente Folsom, Dave and Buster’s, Rondo & Nate Real Estate, EQ1 Real Estate, Folsom Times, Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, Animal ONE & all our department partners for making today a huge success.”
