FOLSOM—A water rescue response was briefly activated by dispatchers Wednesday afternoon after a pickup truck left westbound Highway 50 and eventually plunged into a marsh area west of East Bidwell Street in Folsom. The call prompted a multi-unit dispatch from the Folsom Fire Department before it was determined that both occupants had already escaped the vehicle and were sitting on the shoreline nearby.

The incident was reported at 12:35 p.m., when dispatchers received reports of a truck that had veered off the freeway into a pond-like section of marshland adjacent to the highway. Fire officials said the call was initially treated as a water rescue due to the possibility of occupants trapped in the submerged vehicle. Multiple units were dispatched, including multiple engines, two trucks and medic units along with a Battalion Chief and Folsom Police.

When the first crews arrived, they located a black Chevrolet pickup resting in the heavily vegetated wetland area several yards from the roadway. Firefighters made contact with two occupants who had managed to escape from the truck before the arrival of emergency personnel. Both individuals had swum through the marsh to reach dry ground, where they were met by medics and evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After confirming that both occupants were safely out of the vehicle and no others were involved, the responding units cancelled the incoming boat rescue component of the call. Crews remained on scene to assist with medical care, assess environmental hazards, and support law enforcement as the investigation and recovery process began.

The crash occurred just west of the East Bidwell Street and Scott Road interchange, an area bordered by natural wetlands and drainage ponds that can appear shallow from the roadway but contain deep, soft mud and standing water.

Traffic along westbound Highway 50 was briefly slowed while emergency units accessed the scene on the highway shoulder and nearby access points. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
