Verizon customers across the country are being left without reliable cell service Saturday afternoon as a widespread outage disrupted wireless connections from coast to coast.

The issue began shortly after noon Eastern Time and quickly spread, according to DownDetector, a site that monitors service interruptions. Reports peaked around 3:30 p.m. ET, when nearly 23,000 users had flagged problems. Customers from California to Florida shared frustrations on social media, many saying their devices were stuck in SOS mode, which allows only emergency calls such as 911.

Verizon confirmed the disruption in a statement, attributing it to a software problem. “Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue,” the company said. “We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Verizon had not given a timeline for full restoration of service but directed users to its online Check Network Status page for updates.
