Following a lengthy pursuit Sunday night, Folsom Police apprehended a 14-year-old suspected of involvement in multiple felony vandalism and hate crime incidents involving juveniles on electric motorcycles that have been reported across Folsom in recent weeks.

According to Commander Andrew Bates of the Folsom Police Department, officers responded to a harassment call just after 6 p.m. on Sunday. The report included vandalism and slurs consistent with previous incidents.

As officers arrived, they observed a person dressed in black fleeing the area on an electric motorcycle. Despite police cars with activated lights, the suspect performed a “wheelie” and gestured at an officer before fleeing. The juvenile then rode recklessly into oncoming traffic with the motorcycle’s lights off, according to police reports.

The pursuit, which lasted about an hour, was discontinued several times for safety reasons. Officers maintained surveillance and made multiple attempts to apprehend the rider. Ultimately, the juvenile, a 14-year-old, was captured and booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall on felony charges of evading police and vandalism. Because they are a minor, the suspect’s name will not be released.

“While often called ‘e-bikes,’ these motorcycles are not bicycles,” the department stated. “Capable of speeds greater than 29 mph and lacking pedals, they cannot be operated on streets, sidewalks, or bike trails. Riders using them on public roadways may face charges, including driving without a license.”

Folsom Police noted they have received numerous complaints regarding these vehicles and have conducted an informational campaign over the past year to educate parents about the law. Riders found operating e-motorcycles on roadways or public property may face fines and vehicle impoundment.
