A beloved American comedy is stepping back into the spotlight as Sutter Street Theatre opens You Can’t Take It With You on August 29, bringing George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play to Historic Folsom for a limited run.
The production, presented in partnership with Kauffmans’ Give Us A Hand Productions, is directed by Joaquin Calderon with Allen Schmeltz serving as assistant to the director. Performances will run through September 14 with a mix of evening and matinee shows designed to fit into every playgoer’s calendar.
At the heart of the story is Grandpa Martin Vanderhof, the whimsical patriarch of an eccentric family whose home bustles with everything from fireworks experiments to unexpected guests. His granddaughter Alice finds herself torn when she falls in love with Tony, the straight-laced son of a wealthy Wall Street family. The collision of two worlds—quirky and free-spirited versus polished and status-driven—makes for a heartwarming, comedic reflection on love, family, and the meaning of happiness.
The original play debuted on Broadway in 1936 and has since become a staple of American theatre, celebrated for its sharp wit and timeless reminder that wealth and material possessions fade, but joy, laughter, and love endure.
Sutter Street Theatre, nestled in the heart of Historic Folsom at 717 Sutter Street, is known for its intimate setting that brings audiences up close to the action. With its warm, community-driven atmosphere, the venue has long been a hub for quality live performances ranging from family musicals to bold dramas.
