Get ready for howls of laughter and a dash of Transylvanian flair as Sutter Street Theatre unveils Young Frankenstein, the hilariously offbeat musical comedy from the mind of Mel Brooks. The production opens Friday, July 25, and runs through August 24 with evening shows every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on Sundays at 4:30 p.m.
Directed by Kenny Brian Gagni with Dena Jimena, this PG-13 rated musical takes audiences on a wild ride through cobblestone villages and eerie laboratories, blending witty dialogue, physical comedy, and memorable songs. With musical direction by Connie Mockenhaupt and Rikki Pratt and choreography by Devin LePage and Thomas LePage, the production promises lively numbers and plenty of visual surprises.
Based on Brooks’ 1974 cult-classic film, Young Frankenstein follows Frederick Frankenstein (that’s “Fronk-en-steen,” thank you very much), a respected New York brain scientist who’s less than thrilled to inherit his grandfather’s estate in the spooky hills of Transylvania. But once he arrives, and meets his eccentric assistant Igor (“Eye-gore”) and charming lab partner Inga, it doesn’t take long before Frederick is lured into the legacy of mad science and monster-making. When their experiment inevitably escapes, chaos and comedy ensue.
The musical is known for its quick wit, outrageous characters, and crowd-favorite numbers like “Transylvania Mania” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” In true Brooks fashion, Young Frankenstein delivers laughs with a wink and a nudge—plus a few flashing lights and strobe effects for good measure.
Sutter Street Theatre, located in the heart of Folsom’s Historic District, is known for its welcoming atmosphere, local talent, and consistently enjoyable productions. The theatre continues its 2025 season with this entertaining musical comedy that brings a lighthearted twist to a classic story.
