Student athletes and coaches from Cordova High School gathered for the Lancer Athletic Leadership Conference at City of Rancho Cordova Government City Hall last week. The event aimed to instill ethical leadership qualities in young athletes both on and off the field. The overarching theme revolved around three crucial attributes: focus, drive, and resilience.

“It is inspiring to be apart of and work with dedicated staff at CHS, administration, athletic director, and coaching staff for the purpose to build ethical leadership with our student-athletes. Students were engaged, supportive of each other and focused on a common goal. We want our student-athletes to lead by example on and off the field or court,” Peter Maroon, FCUSD Director of Athletics & Physical Education said.

The conference, organized in partnership with the Rancho Cordova Athletic Association (RCAA), brought together an esteemed lineup of speakers, including Terry Douglas, an alumnus of Cordova High School, who currently serves as the FCUSD Community Safety Specialist. Douglas, connected with students by sharing his personal journey and imparted valuable life lessons.

“As a Cordova alumni and former athlete I was honored to be a part of the Athletic Leadership Conference. One thing I want our student athletes to know is that they are all leaders, and leadership is not what you say, but what you do. I was encouraged by the way our student athlete leaders listened and soaked up all the information they were given. I have already seen several of our student athletes step up on campus. I want our student athletes to understand it’s not just about winning and losing, it’s about character on and off the field. Talent and ability will get you there but character will keep you there,” Terry Douglas, FCUSD Community Safety Specialist said.

Special thanks to Cordova High School Assistant Principal Cody Owens, Cordova High School Athletic Director JP Dolliver, and our dedicated coaches for their unwavering dedication in nurturing ethical and resilient young athletes. Their dedication and involvement are crucial in demonstrating how committed Cordova High School is to this important work. We also commend students for their commitment to embodying these qualities and serving as young leaders on campus.
