The Folsom High School Bulldogs football team and the Oak Ridge High School Stunt and Cheer Team received special recognition this past week for their most recent state championship titles. Team members and coaching staff of both groups were invited to the California State Capitol for commendation of their success along with the Oak Ridge High School 

“I had the pleasure of recognizing the 2023 State Champion Folsom Bulldogs football team on the Assembly Floor,” stated District 7 Assemblyman and Folsom resident Josh Hoover. “They had an amazing season last year, which they capped off with a nail-biting final-minute victory to claim their 5th state title in the last 14 seasons.”

The Folsom Bulldogs secured their fifth State Championship title on December 9 by defeating St. Bonaventure High School 20-14 at Saddleback College in Southern California. With a 12-2 season record, they clinched their fifth title in 14 seasons and their first under the leadership of head coach Paul Doherty. The Bulldogs had previously secured state titles in 2018, 2017, 2014, and 2010.

The team and coaching staff joined Hoover on the Assembly floor to accept their special honor and took photographs with Hoover and other dignitaries.

“Thank you to Coach Paul Doherty and the rest of the coaching staff for leading these young men and creating a winning culture,” Hoover added. “The City of Folsom is proud of all you have accomplished.”

In addition to the Folsom Bulldogs, the Oak Ridge High School Stunt and Cheer team were also acknowledged on the Capitol floor for their recent success, earning them the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in their division. The team was honored by Assemblyman Joe Patterson on the Assembly floor.

Under the guidance of coaches James Blunk and Kat Martin, the team competed against more than 50 teams from across the nation to secure the title. The competition took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida.
