Folsom City Councilman and Vice-Mayor YK Chalamcherla is the latest Folsom resident to announce he will run for the 7th District State Assembly seat in the 2024 election.

Chalamcherla announced his plans Tuesday to run as a democratic candidate for the seat currently held by Folsom’s Joshua Hoover. Braden Murphy, also a resident of Folsom has previously announced his bid for the seat as well.

The 7th Assembly District represents Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights and Carmichael. Hoover was elected to the newly formed District in 2022, narrowly defeating democratic candidate Ken Cooley.

“It is the duty of the Legislature to conduct oversight on how our hard-earned money is spent, right now, we can do more,” Chalamcherla said in the announcement of his bid where he noted if elected some of his key focus points would be state budget accountability, homelessness, climate change and economic growth.

“As an Assemblymember, I will be a strong proponent for conducting more oversight and increasing transparency for how tax dollars are used,” said Chalamcherla, who states his vision is to, “serve Californians with integrity and compassion,” on his website www.yk4u.com.

Chalamcherla was elected to Folsom City Council in November of 2020 after his second campaign for the position. He was named vice-mayor in 2022. Prior to Council, Chalamcherla served as a City of Folsom Parks & Recreations commissioner, an Arts and Cultural commissioner, a County-level board member for the American River Parkway Advisory Board, and as a Folsom Community Service Day Steering Committee member.
